In this extract Jim Quinn talks about the dancehalls he went to as a young man. He says that everybody went to dancehalls in those days, he laughs and says it was the only place you could meet women!

Where did you maybe meet and socialise with your friends when you were teenage age?

As I said I spent quite a bit of time at sea so in Liverpool I sailed out of Liverpool and coasts I done a lot of coasts … we were pretty well known in Liverpool, probably getting a Liverpool accent by one stage. Eh Liverpool … but when we came back here we’d go off and … we drank of course and we’d go to the local dances and things like that, go to the dances … what everybody done in those days …

Did you like going to the dances?

Well the only place you’d see women was at the dances, what else would you do?!

Did you meet your wife at a dance?

Actually she only comes from down the road but I didn’t know her then, I met her in Clery’s.
