In this extract Seamus Marken talks about the importance of his faith to him. He says that his Christianity is very important and that he tries to always see the person of God in everybody he meets. He also feels that with the benefit of age and experience he has managed to become more patient, he remembers that he used to have a very quick temper but he feels that he is better able to control his temper now.

What are the things that have the most meaning for you now in your life?

The things… my faith.

Your faith. How would you describe what it means to you?

How would I describe… it means everything, my very being, you know, I happen to be a Christian, I’m a Catholic, but I like to be a Christian, don’t get me wrong, I’m a bit of a hypocrite as well, you have to allow for a certain amount of that. My philosophy in life, and believe you me I’m really a hypocrite when I say this but I try, I try to see the person of God in everybody I meet, you know? Now it doesn’t always work I have to say… as the poet says ‘somedays…’ what is it? ‘I lose my temper just like another, days I bite the nose off me mother’ You know… I'm sorry, I’m great as long as I don’t have to lose my temper, you know, I think I’ve managed to keep my temper in control but I have a wicked temper… there you are, you might think I’m joking, I'm not, I’m quite serious, you know, I can’t… certain things drive me mad that I can’t… you know, for instance I’d rather you hit me than threaten me, you know what I mean? I can’t bear anybody threatening me, that just doesn’t wash with me at all, I don’t know why, it’s just something… Other than that I... I don’t think I’ve ever made any real enemies in life as such, you know… I remember one guy I fell out with but that wasn’t my fault, it was his own, and… that was it, like, you know, I remember meeting him later on and tried to shake hands with him but he wouldn’t so what can I do? That's all. I do try to be a Christian, you know and help people if I can, you know, I love helping people I must say, that’s why I’m here today.
